Denali National Park in Alaska is six million acres of wild land, bisected by one ribbon of road. Travelers along the road see the relatively low-elevation taiga forest give way to high alpine tundra and snowy mountains, culminating in North America’s tallest peak. Called The Mountain by locals, Denali stands 20,310 feet tall. Photo by National Park Service.

The Sea Wolves

https://maptia.com/cristinamittermeier/stories/the-sea-wolves

British Columbia’s coastal wolves, also called “sea wolves” or “rain wolves,” are special — living a unique existence, they hunt and beach-comb on the fringe between rainforest and ocean, with more than 70 per cent of their diet comprised of seafood. Wolves are highly intelligent social animals, and these coastal wolves are an entirely distinct ecotype, showing many unusual behaviors that have fascinated scientists, as they swim between islands, and eat whatever the sea serves up. Smaller than their inland kin, wolves like this once roamed much of the West Coast. Today they are found only in British Columbia and southeastern Alaska.

I was walking through icy streams That took my breath away Moving slowly through westward water Over glacial plains

And I walked off you And I walked off an old me Oh me oh my I thought it was a dream So it seemed

And now, breathe deep I'm inhaling You and I, there's air in between Leave me be I'm exhaling You and I, there's air in between You and I, there's air in between

Cut my hair so I could rock back and forth Without thinking of you Learned to talk and say Whatever I wanted to

And I walked off you And I walked off an old me Oh me oh my I thought it was a dream So it seemed

And now, breathe deep I'm inhaling You and I, there's air in between Leave me be I'm exhaling You and I, there's air in between

You and I, there's air in between You and I, there's air in between

Children of the Arctic

Children of the Arctic is a year-in-the-life portrait of Native Alaskan teenagers coming of age in Barrow, Alaska - the northern-most community of the United States. For these teenagers growing up has become a little more complicated than it was for their ancestors who originally named this place “Ukpiagvik” (“where we hunt snowy owls”). They are the twenty-first century descendants of a culture that has endured for millennia on this isolated, but rapidly changing tundra. The harvest of the agvik (bowhead whale) remains the heart of their culture - in the fall, motor boats and modern methods are used, whereas, in the spring, whaling crews use the umiaq (a seal-skin boat made by hand) and ancient traditional methods.

Why these mysterious, blood-sucking fish fell from the Alaskan sky It all began outside of Value Village in Fairbanks, Alaska. Somehow, a strange-looking eel-like fish -- equipped with teeth perfect for latching onto another animal and sucking its blood -- ended up in the thrift store's parking lot last week. #usa #alaska #blood #sucking #fish #marine #biology #wtf
