Markets Need a Hidden #Fist?

source: https://fee.org/articles/markets-need-a-hidden-fist/
Second, #Friedman thinks we need to worry about those pesky foreigners who don’t understand the benefits of #globalization quite as well as he does. His basic idea boils down to this: “The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist—McDonald’s cannot flourish without McDonnell Douglas, the builder of the F-15. And the hidden fist that keeps the world safe for Silicon Valley’s technologies is called the United States Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.” In other words, if it weren’t for #America the Global #Policeman, we wouldn’t have all those foreign markets for our goods.

#Deglobalization: curing the economic and social ills of #globalization

Neoliberalism is founded on free trade, the concept of private business, and a minimal role of the state. It is the mental framework of globalization. It also comes with a huge social cost. To offer a comprehensive paradigm to replace neoliberal globalization is deglobalization for the developing countries.

The deglobalization paradigm rests on some solid recommendations for its operationalization. Foremost of these concepts is the return to the production for domestic market as the nucleus of the economy, rather than globalization’s production for export markets.

In order to preserve the community, production of goods should be prioritized at the level of the community... mehr anzeigen

The Boston Review has an outstanding forum led by Dean Baker with commentary from several other economists about how globalization is a series of political decisions that sought to protect the wealthy from competition while subjecting the poor to a global race to the bottom. [...] And let me reiterate, there is no such thing as market forces. These are not immutable laws like gravity. These are all a series of decisions made by humans. They have the option to make other decisions. They do not do so. But we should not naturalize this. We could have had a system of globalization that sought to share economic benefits equally. But because the process was controlled by the rich for the benefit of the rich (and let’s remember that the core reason for globalization in the last 50 years is CEOs and shareholders seeking to bust unions and escape environmental protection by moving overseas), that never happened. Today, the capitalists have naturalized the process to deflect how they control all of it. This is basically believed not only on the right and by elites

When Two Worlds Collide

El Choque De Dos Mundos

The hazardous journey of an Amazonian leader confronting rules of the globalization game created by developed countries in order to protect corporate interests. With the rainforest in jeopardy, this apocalyptic story presents two colliding visions that shape the climate future of our world.

In this tense and immersive tour de force, audiences are taken directly into the line of fire between powerful, opposing Peruvian leaders who will stop at nothing to keep their respective goals intact. On the one side is President Alan Garcia, who, eager to enter the world stage, begins aggressively extracting oil, minerals, and gas from untouched indigenous Amazonian land. He is quick... mehr anzeigen

The galaxy-shaped Indian utopia built on principles of no money or government

As capitalism and globalization grow increasingly unpopular, new economic and social models are popping across the world – including India. But they don’t always pan out as well as their founding ideals. Case in point is Auroville, a city designed to be a grand utopia without money or government.

Auroville, an Indian utopia founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, was built on a vision of no money or government, but still has a way to go to reach their goals.

The End of Globalization? The International Security Implications

Over the last few decades, globalization has created great wealth and brought millions out of poverty. Today, a combination of technology, politics, and social pressures seems to be reversing globalization. While the new technology will continue to create wealth, it will favor developed countries. The increasing regionalization of economies and differences in rates of growth will create instability and challenge international security arrangements.

“Globalization is all about wealth. It knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. Without borders the world will become—is visibly becoming—a howling desert of traffic fumes, plastic and concrete, where nowhere is home and the only language is money.”
