We’re all familiar with the apocryphal Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times.” Well, folks, here we are. Another famous saying, this one by Mark Twain goes, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme.” Right now it seems to be rhyming with the opening verses of some pretty dark poetry.
Like many people, I entered into 2017 feeling anxious about our future. I still am. I think it’s critical that those of us who are alive today do not go down in history as having sat idly by. We must fight to preserve what we believe in, and we need to do it now. I am not a footsoldier, nor am I a natural leader, but I’m trying to do my part in best way I know how: by making sure the true warriors have a tactical advantage. The internet can be an amazing tool for free expression and collective action, but it can be used just as powerfully to surveil, disrupt, and oppress.
That’s why I put together a team of talented and compassionate people to build a secure online platform for activists, organizers, and human rights defenders, and to give it away for free. We call ourselves Gibberfish, Inc. We have a plan and we’re here to see it through, but we need your help.
We have set up a crowdfunding campaign on Generosity.com
and we are accepting donations of any amount. Please share this post on social media with everyone you know, and if you can, consider making a contribution. If you know anyone who might need our services, please put them in contact with us via our website at www.gibberfish.org
I’ll leave you all with one more quote, which Benjamin Franklin may or may not have actually said, but it rings true for me nonetheless. “We must all hang together or we shall all hang separately.”
Please spread the word. Thanks.
