America Health Declines

The rich are getting richer by rigging the system in their favor, leaving the rest of us to struggle just to keep our heads above water.

Life expectancy is now declining for middle-aged white Americans, especially those with a high school education or less.

Health inequality, just like economic inequality, has grown in the country.

America prides itself on being one of the world’s most prosperous countries, and can boast that in every recent year except one (2009

But, while the US spends more money per capita on medical care than almost any other country (and more as a percentage of GDP), it is far from topping the world in life expectancy. France, for example, spends less than 12% of its GDP on medical care, compared to 17% in the US. Yet Americans can expect to live three full years less than the French... mehr anzeigen

Think about that for a second. Traditionally speaking, most of the work going on around us is only considered work, if one gets paid to do it. Are you a parent? Sorry, that's not work. Are you in paid childcare? Congratulations, that's work. Are you an open source programmer? Sorry, that's not work. Are you a paid software engineer? Congratulations, that's work.

It was the context of all this unpaid work at a conference focused on what happens in an

As a boom fades, Brazilians wonder how it all went wrong

“(...) It was not just the drop in global prices for Brazilian commodities like iron ore, the slumping demand in markets like China, or even the brewing corruption scandal at the national oil company that were hurting the country. Ms. Rousseff’s own economic policies were taking a toll, too, officials concede. (...)

Now, an economic crisis is unleashing a withering national exploration of how Brazil squandered its hard-won success.

Highlighting the strain, Standard & Poor’s downgraded Brazil’s credit rating to junk status on Wednesday, igniting a broad sell-off of Brazilian financial assets on Thursday. The blow is expected to increase Brazil’s borrowing costs while focusing even more scrutin... mehr anzeigen

Many say the so-called “Citizen Safety Law” has nothing to do with the safety of citizens and is more like a return to the days of the dictator, Francisco Franco. In a country where thousands have people have first lost their jobs due to budget cuts, followed by losing their homes because they can’t pay their mortgages, it has been a harsh experience for the average Spaniard.

#Precarity guaranteed
The «european youth guarantee» is an ineffectual attempt to tackle the issue of youth #unemployment. Policy Paper 04/2015 by Thomas Sablowski and Sandra Sieron. http://www.rosalux.de/publication/41570

According to Eurostat, the unemployment rate for 15- to 24-year-olds in the third quarter of 2014 in the European Union was 21.3 percent. The official number in Spain was 52.4 percent, with 49.5 percent in Greece, 40.4 percent in Croatia and 39.3 percent in Italy. The high level of youth unemployment in the EU is not only an economical problem; it is increasingly also a political problem for governments.
