"It won't just be Amazon doing this. Facebook will ask for (and get) direct access to your bank account and the #payments #infrastructure. Next time you need to send your friend a tenner, you'll instant-message them the #money, rather than opening up your boring bank #app, fiddling about finding their #bank details, authenticating yourself again and finally firing off the cash. You'll just type '+£10' in your #WhatsApp chat," writes David Birch, a digital financial consultant, in Wired #UK....
"No big deal, you might think. But remember that almost all customer interactions with banks are payments. If banks never see the #customer making payments, they lose their most important resource: data," writes Birch.#finance #bigdata #economy #news #technology

While the Census #data consists entirely of publicly accessible statistics and information, Experian’s ConsumerView #marketing #database, a product sold to other enterprises, contains a mix of public details and more sensitive data.Taken together, the exposed data reveals billions of personally identifying details and data points about virtually every American household....
On October 6, 2017, UpGuard Director of Cyber Risk Research Chris Vickery discovered an Amazon Web Services S3cloud storage bucket located at the subdomain “alteryxdownload” containing sensitive consumer information. While the default security setting for S3 buckets would allow only specifically authorized users to access the contents, this bucket was configured via permission settings to allow any AWS “Authenticated Users” to download its stored data....
The first rule in Internet #business is: Nothing is for #free! It’s only free for a little fee. You pay with your private #information. This information will be monitored and sold – it’s called #BigData.source: https://anonsurvivalguide.wordpress.com/2017/12/02/free-email-where-you-dont-pay-with-the-lose-of-your-privacy/
If you are using a version of #Firefox with Cliqz search recommendations, your browsing data will be sent to Cliqz Gmbh, a German #company.…
Today we are adding language to our Facebook and Instagram platform policies to more clearly explain that developers cannot “use data obtained from us to provide tools that are used for surveillance.”
It's perfectly reasonable to consider this API as another means for webpages to gather and aggregate information about users; and if challenged the industry will use familiar weasel-words about how users can experience wonderful new services users will get if they just hand over a little more private data.
In an algorithmic system, there are three main sources of bias that could lead to biased or discriminatory outcomes: input, training and programming. Input bias could occur when the source data itself is biased because it lacks certain types of information, is not representative or reflects historical biases.
Nontraditional data can be collected from a variety of sources, including databases containing #internet search histories, shopping patterns, social media activity and various other consumerrelated inputs. In theory, this type of information can be fed into algorithms that enable lenders to assess the creditworthiness of people who lack sufficient financial records or credit histories to be "scorable" under traditional models. Although this approach to underwriting has the potential to expand access to credit for borrowers who would not have been considered creditworthy, it can also produce unfair or discriminatory lending decisions if not appropriately implemented and monitored.
