Advertisers Aren't As Powerful As We Think

There is growing evidence, it seems, that suggests the under-thirty demographic simply doesn't respond to advertisements, and that brand loyalty is becoming virtually non-existent.

Artists Fill Paris With 600 Fake Ads To Protest Corporate Sponsorship Of Climate Conference

Paris is grabbing the world's attention again, but this time, it's with environmental messages aimed at the world leaders, including Obama, that gathered for the COP21 climate conference on Monday. 600 fake posters denouncing major corporations were installed behind the glass at bus stops around the city by Brandalism, a UK-based project. 82 artists from 19 countries joined them to help fight corporate control in advertising.

Google's redefined #privacy policy lets #ads follow you everywhere

#google
In 2007, Google bought online advertising network Doubleclick with the assurance that they would prioritize user privacy as they developed new ad products. They've kept that promise, dividing their massive database of web browsing data from the personal info collected from Gmail and other parts of its product suite. Until last summer. That's when the search giant quietly asked account owners to opt-in to sharing more data, an oblique request for permission to bundle user browser activity with personally-identifying information to better cater ads. In essence, signing up lets Google's ads know who you are no matter where you go across different devices.

London Tube adverts replaced with cat pictures as ‘citizens takeover’ purrs into life

Monday 12th September 2016 -- A crowdfunded campaign to replace adverts with pictures of cats was launched today at Clapham Common Tube station in London.
http://weglimpse.co/catsnotads/
The Citizens Advertising Takeover Service (CATS) replaced 68 adverts in the station after organisers raised £23,000 on Kickstarter. The animals featured are stray cats from two rescue charities, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and Cats Protection.

The initiative is the first project from Glimpse, a new collective which aims to use creativity for good.
Glimpse founder James Turner said:

“We tried to imagine a world where public spaces made you feel good. We hope people will enjoy being in the station and maybe think a bit differently about the world around them.

Journalismus? Ich kotze, wenn ich dieses Wort lese!

For anybody who has not seen it yet: There was an #ethicist from #oxford #university thinking about the #ethics of #advertisement and #blocking it on the web:

Why It’s OK to Block Ads by James Williams
What I find remarkable is the way both sides of this debate seem to simply assume the large-scale capture and exploitation of human attention to be ethical and/or inevitable in the first place.

I'm sick and tired of sites that whine about my use of ad blocking

The solution for you is simple: Take responsibility for your advertising by hosting it yourself. Cut out the middleman altogether! You never actually needed ad servers anyway.

Yes I know that few sites have the resources to take this course alone. None of them probably will before they have to. Ad blocking will have to destroy the ad servers first. So stand by while we ad-block users destroy the middlemen for you, and we can all move into a better future together.
