It’s a #campaign that achieves several goals at once. The trips help solidify political and #business ties between China and its partners on the #continent. Like other #development partners, China gets to help build capacity in African countries. Most importantly these exchanges cultivate partners on the continent who are more likely to be sympathetic to China and its way of doing things.

But not all lessons from China should be learned. Under Xi Jinping, China has tightened its stranglehold over civil #society. South #Sudan is already familiar with some of these tactics. Local journalists are intimidated into silence or killed.

Quartz: Beijing is cultivating the next generation of African elites by training them in China (Lily Kuo)

“We have learned quite a lot from the Chinese Communist Party."
Oppressive regimes appeal to some, I guess.
Define African elites

Educated Africans who do just what they are told as the new power- same as the old power - strip mines Africa...

Congrats to China and African elites with Chinese weapons. This should end well... So long as it isn't Americans in control.

Meh...
I think it's useful to look beyond cynicism and consider how this will shape the coming century. Will it lift millions of Africans from poverty? Will it help curb emissions and reduce the chances of runaway global warning? Will it cause more or less wars?
No, no and no...

The thought that the Chi-coms are there to help the black man where the globalists failed...

smh...
If you like China that much, try to work for Foxconn for more than a week...
@anonymiss, was that comment aimed at me? I don't like China that much. But I think the 'all oppressive regimes are the same' line isn't helpful. The difference to hundreds of millions of African lives could be significant, and not all forms of pseudo-colonialism are the same. Obviously complete lack of colonialism would be better.
@rottostein, do you have any actual analysis to offer? China operates differently from the US and Europe. Of course they are pursuing their own interests, but the differences in how they act are important and could shape Africa for this century. How that shapes Africa is important and affects hundreds of millions of lives.
